X-ray radiation protection – what do you need to do when opening a new / squat practice?
-Appoint an RPA/MPE
-Send the practice drawings to your RPA for review. Not only is this a statutory requirement, it also ensures appropriate design features in place (and similarly that costly shielding which isn’t required hasn’t been included, as happens on occasion!). This should be done prior to x-ray equipment being installed and prior to build process (if applicable).
-Supported by your RPA, draft the required elements of your Radiation Protection File including risk assessments, local rules and IRMER procedures
-Appoint a ‘Radiation Protection Supervisor’ within the practice
-Register with the HSE prior to operating x-ray equipment
-Make arrangements for a critical examination and acceptance test of the equipment to be carried out.
CompleteRPA can support you through this process – please get in touch to see how we can help.
Information regarding registration with HSE can be found on their website here:
