Have you registered your work with x-rays with the HSE?
All dental practices utilising x-ray equipment are required to register with the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) under the Ionising Radiations Regulations. Registration is undertaken online and involves a series of questions to ensure all of the legal requirements have been met. This includes appointment of an RPA (Radiation Protection Adviser), Risk Assessment and Local Rules, ensuring staff training is place, et cetera – information regarding these will be contained within your dental radiation protection file. You only need to register once, unless there are significant changes (e.g. a change in the employer/legal entity).
Registration should undertaken by the Employer themself or someone authorised to do so on their behalf (e.g. a practice manager). You can visit the HSE website here:
https://www.hse.gov.uk/radiation/ionising/notification-process.htm
The HSE charge a one-off fee of £25 for registration.
Your RPA will help guide you through the process, for CompleteRPA customers we have a guidance sheet available – please drop us an email info@completerpa.co.uk .
HSE have indicated that in the future they may look to collect more information on the sites and equipment which dentists are operating, so if you haven’t yet registered with HSE it would be advisable to address this now.
