Radiation Protection File updates – how often?
This is a frequently asked question! Guidance recommends that dental x-ray equipment QA tests are carried out at least every three years and, once carried out, these should be reviewed by your RPA / MPE. In addition, The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations, or IRMER for short, requires that the employer has quality assurance for written procedures and protocols in place. Part of the RPA/MPE contract renewal process therefore involves review of key documents such as risk assessments, local rules and checks that key documents such as training records are in place. Of course if there are major changes in practice or equipment (or changes in regulations and standards/guidance), then the file may require immediate updates.
